Last But Certainly Not Least
Boris at his Best

"Cabman John Gray" in
The Body Snatcher
One of our favorite Karloff films is The Body Snatcher (RKO, 1945), based on Robert Louis Stevenson's short story, produced by the legendary Val Lewton, directed with flair and imagination by young Robert Wise, and featuring one of Boris' finest performances -- many say his very best. Boris is superbly supported in this unforgettable low-budget masterpiece by horror stalwarts Henry Daniell and Bela Lugosi.
Stevenson's story was based on the real-life Scottish grave robbers Burke and Hare, who prospered briefly in Edinburgh in the 1820s by supplying doctors with very fresh cadavers for medical research. If the local cemeteries couldn't provide enough fresh corpses to meet the demand, these enterprising "resurrection men" were imaginative enough to create their own!
The story of their 17-victim murder spree is an interesting chapter in the history of crime, but the scandal had a very positive result, effecting legal changes that eliminated the medical need for such sordid business partners. Not to mention Stevenson's ripping yarn, based on the grisly facts, and, many years later, this great film with its terrific role for Karloff, who said that working with Val Lewton "rescued me and restored my soul."
